An article printed in the Redlands Daily Facts this week points to a case where Redlands Police were able to leverage a network of surveillance cameras throughout the downtown business district to trace and apprehend a shoplifter.
According ot the article, police recieved a report on Tuesday that an individual had stolen a number of dresses from clothier Devi. Using the description provided by store employees, the police department dispathers were able to locate the woman and follow her to where she met up with a man and child, at which point the dispatcher sent on-duty officers to the location to apprehend.
According to Redlands Police, the network of surveillance cameras scattered throughout the city helps them put the limited resources that their cash-strapped department has available at any given time right on target. The department is presently short of fifteen officers due to budgetary limitations.
This is just another example of how a properly installed surveillance camera system canĀ act as a force multiplier for cities, and lower their costs at the same time.
