Megapixel and H.264 are the hottest topics in IP Surveillance market recently. But some might wonder: Why should we use these new technologies, and how do these technologies work on IP Surveillance systems? The article below demonstrates how these technologies bring Video Surveillance into a new generation.
Megapixel Cameras, as the name suggests, provide more than 1,000,000 pixels within the camera’s view range. With D1 resolution CCTV cameras contain less than 400,000 pixels each camera, a single Megapixel Cameras can provide image details equals to multiple CCTV cameras. This is a very powerful feature, which reduce the setup cost and increase the simplicity of video surveillance managing. For instance, if there are 4 important sites that require 8 CCTV cameras each site to ensure every angle and details is being watched, there will be 32 cameras and a 36-channel DVR. By using Megapixel cameras, there might only need 2 cameras for each site, which is 8 cameras with an 8-channel NVR. That’s much more effective and cost-saving!

So why did Megapixel come so late into the IP Surveillance system? One main reason is, Megapixel IP Cameras increase network loading and local storage spaces significantly. For example, a 1.3 Megapixel (1280×1024) IP Camera contains 4 times the pixels as a VGA (640×480) camera, which means the streaming bandwidth also become 4 times larger, as well as the video storage capacity.
With H.264 compression technology, it can compress the streaming size much smaller than MPEG4 or MJPEG. Assuming same quality level, H.264 is about half of the streaming size of MPEG4, and 1/10 of the streaming size of MJPEG! It perfectly solves the problem of increased network loading and storage with megapixel cameras. If Megapixel is a door to the next generation of video surveillance, H.264 is the key to open the door!
Zavio, a professional IP Camera manufacturer, sees the trend and develops a series of 1.3 Megapixel IP Cameras, providing great benefits as follows:
- Cost Saving
A 1.3 megapixel camera provides exceptional details equals to 4 CCTV cameras. The cost of cameras, installation and management are greatly reduced. - Bandwidth & Storage saving
With Zavio H.264 technology, high-quality megapixel videos can be streamed smoothly through normal networks. The recorded video file sizes are also significantly decreased, enabling longer recording-time in the same storage space. - Easier Managing
With Zavio IP Surveillance Software, it’s very easy to manage these Megapixel Cameras. From the previous example, 8 Zavio 1.3 Megapixel Cameras + Software = 32 CCTV Cameras + 36-Channel DVR. It’s much easier to manage 8 cameras than 32 cameras, for sure!
