San Juan Police Propose All Businesses Install Security Cameras

A rash of burglaries in San Juan has local authorities considering a mandate that all businesses must install security cameras.

The cameras would help authorities catch criminals and possibly act as a deterrent.

Surveillance May Lead to Charges In Prison Riot

Cleveland.com is reporting on a police riot in Lancaster, Ohio.

Inmates set fire to toilet paper and mattresses in the riot. Luckily no one was hurt. Sheriff Dave Phalen says that charges may be pressed once the security footage is reviewed.

Memphis to Install 64 Surveillance Cameras

Plans are in motion to cover downtown Memphis, TN with security cameras.

The reason is to encourage tourism and new business by deterring aggressive beggars, which run rampant over the area.

The cameras are estimated to cost around $300,000.

Columbus Police Seeking Robbery Suspect

Police are looking for help in identifying a man who robbed a Columbus-area Church’s Chicken recently.

The armed man allegedly took cash from the store at gunpoint.

No surveillance footage was available. While police found the getaway vehicle, it was unoccupied and also found to be stolen. More details are available in the full story.

Pittsburgh Officials Tout Effectiveness of Security Cameras

Officials in the Marshall-Shadeland section of Pittsburgh are touting the benefits of their new surveillance systems, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune.

Pittsburgh is one of many US cities experimenting with the use of security cameras as a crime deterrent.

They’re also expected to expand to include up to 200 cameras over the next 18 months.

Surveillance Cameras A Potential Tool to Prevent Employee Fraud

We often examine the implications of surveillance in terms of preventing robberies or catching criminals after they’ve committed a violent crime, but a recent article in the Montreal Gazette looks at it from a unique perspective: as a tool to prevent worker’s compensation fraud.

Employers often feel frustrated by what they perceive as potentially abusive and fraudulent claims of these benefits, and are often left with little to no recourse. The article examines the possibility of using surveillance systems to catch employees doing things they’ve been deemed medically unable to perform.

This brings up some ethical and legal issues, of course, but the article examines them as well, and looks at the options employers have.

Surveillance Video of Streetsboro School Fire Leaves Police Investigating Arson

Surveillance video of a recent fire at Streetsboro High School has led area investigators to suspect that arson may have been the cause, according to Fox 8 in Cleveland.

The fire caused over 2 Million in damages and forced school to close early for the year.

Video shows three shadowy figures around the school at the time of the blaze, one of which approached the school and had a conversation with someone inside.

While not proof of any wrongdoing, it is leading investigators to follow up on the surveillance footage and look for more information on the individuals who were nearby.

Improved Video Surveillance Helpful to Ohio Police

Police in Heath, OH have found the increased quality and reduced prices a remarkably valuable tool in fighting crime, according to the Lancaster Eagle. While video and photos are not new tools to police, the increased quality available from today’s advanced equipment is making it ever more important and valuable. In the past month, surveillance systems have led to arrests in cases involving local gas station and bank robberies.

Now, they’re hoping video recovered from a local motel will help solve a pending murder case, too.

Security Cameras Show a Store Owner Shooting a Man Attempting a Robbery

Surveillance cameras at a small Elyria store caught a man attempting to enter and rob the store, and subsequently getting shot by the owner.

Fox 8 has video of the incident, as well as interviews with the store owner and reaction from local residents.

The surveillance footage shows the man busting through the locked store door, the owner shooting him on entry, and the man fleeing the scene.

Elyria police are looking for information from anyone who might be able to identify the man in the security video.

Security Camera Catches Footage of an Armed Robbery

Fox 8 News in Cleveland, OH has posted photos taken from a local security camera of an armed robber.

The robber entered the Circle K store in Ravenna and threatened the local clerk at knifepoint.

He took an undisclosed amount of money and then locked the on-duty clerk in the bathroom.
