Computer Surveillance Leads to Arrest

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Earlier today, three men were caught in Sacramento, CA and arrested on suspicion of theft. The men were allegedly stealing air conditioner units for the copper wire inside them.

The news, however, is that they were caught by a man watching the security footage at his store. He was watching the footage at home on his laptop.

PC video surveillance led to the arrest of the suspects, who were apprehended in short order while driving away with a vehicle full of air conditioning units.

We’ll try to have more on this as videos are released, but it shows the value that a video surveillance system can add to your business and to the community.

What to Look for When Choosing Commercial Surveillance Equipment

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

If you’ve reached the point where you realize your business needs to invest in surveillance equipment, you’ve probably become overwhelmed trying to figure out what kind you need.

If that’s the case, this article is going to be extremely helpful for you. The security experts at PC Surveillance have compiled a list of the most important things to keep in mind when choosing surveillance equipment for your business. Although these guidelines may not apply evenly across all industries, they are a good place to start as you try to determine which surveillance system best meets your business’ needs.

Guidelines for Choosing Surveillance Equipment

Surveillance systems are designed primarily to provide security for your business, but they can also enhance the quality control of a company, help with continuous improvement processes and improve employee efficiency.

That being said, the most important thing to consider when looking at surveillance equipment is where the camera(s) will be located, because this directly impacts which models you need to buy. When analyzing your intended surveillance area you need to consider the following:

  • Lighting Conditions. How well lit is the area you want under surveillance? If you work in darker conditions you’ll need a surveillance camera with LED’s or built-in infrareds. If you work in a setting that experiences drastic light changes you need to use Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) Surveillance Equipment that can remove glare from a picture and help you see faces and specific details.
  • Size of coverage area. The size of the area you want to cover directly affects the size and strength of the surveillance system you need to purchase. Keep in mind that areas with warehouse ceilings or elevated mounting options will need more powerful lenses as well. This is where things can get a bit technical, so it’s best to consult a surveillance professional to determine which system will best fit your coverage needs.
  • Type of area you’re covering. Depending on what industry you’re in, you may be covering areas of sensitive testing or quality control. These require high resolution surveillance cameras and may even benefit from those with varifocal lenses.
  • Weatherproofing/waterproofing needs. If you’re performing surveillance on the outside of a building you absolutely need to use waterproof surveillance equipment. However, some indoor cameras benefit from waterproof features as well. For example, monitoring a process that uses liquids necessitates weatherproof/waterproof cameras as a matter of precaution, and facilities that have dusty, dry environments can be hostile to unprotected lenses as well.

Choosing a surveillance system for your business is a big investment and an important decision. This guide is an excellent place to get started as you begin exploring the different types of surveillance equipment on the market. However, due to the technical nature of the industry, we recommend seeking guidance from a professional. The surveillance experts at PC Surveillance can help you determine what equipment will be most effective for your business, and they can even help you design a surveillance system that meets your specific needs.
